The city of Terni has retained little of its original historical monuments, but it makes an inexpensive base for exploring Umbria or for attending the more expensive events such as the Spoleto Festival dei due Mondi.
A main stop on the Italy train system, Terni is a convenient hub for getting through Umbria on your way to Spoleto. Among its notable sites are a Roman Amphitheater dating from 32 BC and the medieval remains of Palazzo Mazzancolli.
