In Florence just across the Arno river likes Palazzo Pitti, the daunting building of the Pitti family, one-time rivals of the Medici.
No longer an inhabited palace, Palazzo Pitti now houses five museums. Once owned by the Pitti's and a symbol of their rivalry to the Medici's, the palace was begun in 1458 but later purchased by the Medici themselves in 1549.
